Brandon has attracted its share of out-of-state franchises over the past decade. Examples include Chicago-based Portillo’s restaurant and Rosati’s pizza, Kentucky-based Thornton’s gas and convenience store and Wawa, which started in Pennsylvania.
Those businesses initially catered to the Northern and Midwestern transplants before winning over East Hillsborough residents with their food and services.
Until recently, for authentic Philly cheesesteaks, pretzels and hoagies in this area, Wawa was the only real option. Philly Phlava expanded from Tampa to Brandon in 2013, but has since closed that location. And the Philly Pretzel Factory opened in Riverview last year, but it too has since closed.
Now, there’s another Brandon option for a cheesesteak — Philly Grill, a chain established in 1993, recently opened at 1232 Kingsway Rd. And yes, they have arguably the most important Philly ingredient — the rolls that come directly from Amoroso’s Baking Company, just over the Walt Whitman Bridge in South Jersey.
Philly Grill owner Ita Udotong is a native of Nigeria who moved to the Tampa area in 2010. He understands the appeal of a good Philly Cheesesteak or hoagie. His restaurant has the prerequisite Eagles, 76ers, Phillies and Flyers posters on the wall, and you can drink an original Philly Hank’s bottled soda. Depending on how hungry you are, you can enjoy a little hoagie (7 inches) for $6.95 or a big hoagie (10-inches) for $8.95.
Udotong was a licensed land surveyor who shipped items such as cars and equipment back to his native country before opening the Brandon area’s first Philly Grill, in what he calls a “good location and good neighborhood” next to a Publix.
“The people who come in the first time, before you know it, come in again,” he said.
