Meat Monsters Grill replaces Graham's Retro Diner - The San Diego Union-Tribune

The Andrews family are doubling up on their restaurant expansions by opening Meat Monsters Grill in Ramona and Fat Anthony’s Delicatessen in Julian.

The patriarch, Anthony, grew up in Ramona and lived in the community for 40 years, although the family moved to Julian three years ago.

Anthony’s interest in opening the eateries stems from his background working at restaurants such as Nuevo Grill & Cantina in Ramona and sharing a love for cooking with his great-grandfather who formerly owned Alotta Pizzeria in National City.

The Andrews have also owned and operated A & S Catering & BBQ based in Ramona with a commercial kitchen in San Diego the past four years. One of Anthony and Jenny’s three daughters, Symona, 20, has been running A & S the past six months as other family members launch their new endeavors. Daughter, Natalie, 23, is involved in Meat Monsters and a third daughter, Breanna, 26, lives in Idaho.

Anthony said A & S has achieved a five-star rating for its barbecue and catering services including weddings, birthdays and other special events.

“All three of our businesses are family run and all of our staff are considered family, too,” Anthony said. “There are people I’ve known for 20 years working for us.”

The Andrews opened Meat Monsters Grill in the former Graham’s Retro Diner building at 733 Main St. on Dec. 22. Anthony said he met with former Graham’s Retro Diner owner Louise Graham, who he said wanted to move onto bigger and better things. The new owners brought in four staff members who include certified food handlers and trained cooks.

“We are at the complete other end of the spectrum from Graham’s Retro Diner,” said Anthony. “It was just a great opportunity to step into a fully functioning restaurant that needed nothing more than good customer service and quality food with a family atmosphere.”

For now, Meat Monsters Grill is serving breakfast and lunch with plans to eventually expand to dinner service. In addition to traditional breakfast items including chicken fried steak and omelettes, the restaurant serves burgers, steaks and hot wings.

Anthony said they plan to hold food challenges in which patrons will be challenged to eat a 96-ounce steak, 4-pound hamburger, nuclear hot wings or up to 20 scoops of ice cream banana split-style in one sitting.

“If they can beat the challenge they will get the meal for free, a T-shirt and a picture on the wall for a lifetime of recognition,” said Anthony, who got the idea for the challenges from the movie “Uncle Buck.” “If they can’t eat it, they’ll pay for it, and they get a picture taken to be placed in the restrooms with a pencil next to it.”

As they ramp up menu items and hours of operation, the Andrews envision adding delivery service in about a month or so. Anthony said OrangeCrate will likely deliver lunches along Main Street in Ramona in the beginning stage so business owners have the convenience of dining in their stores and businesses.

“We’re very modest in pricing,” he said. “I understand how it is to be a working man and have to bring a family out to a meal that can cost $100 to $150 together with desserts and drinks. Some places are outrageous in pricing and I can’t do that to my customers.”

The Andrews refurbished the building they acquired for Fat Anthony’s Delicatessen at 2128 Fourth St. in Julian in November 2019. Anthony said it needed a few upgrades after being formerly occupied by the Candied Apple Café and previously used as a firehouse. Fat Anthony’s now serves sandwiches, Italian dinners and charcuterie plates.
