Forks up, ASU sports fans: College Bar in Tempe is reopening on Mill Avenue - AZCentral

Looks like College Bar & Grill wasn't down for long. About a month after closing, the Tempe sports bar and restaurant could reopen on Mill Avenue as early as Friday or Saturday, Jan. 10 or 11.

College Bar was known for fueling the spirited rivalry between Arizona State University and University of Arizona. The bar will take over the former location of House of Tacos, on the northwest corner of Mill Avenue and University Drive, said co-owner Nick Nicholas.

Fans should check College Bar's Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for updates on opening time.

"We went through a bit of an upgrade," Nicholas said. "Being on Mill is going to be a plus for our day-to-day business."

While the new space isn't as close to the venues for ASU basketball and football games as the old space on College Avenue, Nicholas expects the bigger location will bring in more everyday business.

Inside the ultimate ASU fanzone

Nicholas and his partner Joe Healey first opened College Bar across the street from Sun Devil Stadium. It served as a hangout spot for ASU fans to cheer on their team, as well as watch "The Bachelor."

Healey has deep ties to the Sun Devils. He graduated from ASU in 2006 with a degree in interdisciplinary studies. He co-hosts an ASU football podcast called "Speak of the Devils" and his father Tim Healey is the play-by-play radio announcer for ASU football, men’s basketball and baseball.

College Bar was known for its "zero tolerance policy" toward UA fans, banning anyone wearing UA gear or exhibiting "Wildcat behavior." People wearing neutral colors would have to sing the ASU fight song to be allowed in or remain inside, the bar advertised on Instagram.

"Truth be told, we only reinforced that on game days when U of A fans are in town," Nicholas said.

On nongame days, the bar will simply charge Wildcats double, he joked.

What to expect at the new College Bar

College Bar will continue to offer $5 pitchers and all-you-can-eat wings. The menu will also expand to include wraps and salads.

Once open, the bar's hours will be from 11 a.m. to last call every day, Nicholas said. The bigger space allows for more TVs, and along with sports, College Bar will continue to show "The Bachelor" on Mondays, he added.

"We're excited to be on Mill Ave," Nicholas said. "Gauging by the reaction on social media, our clientele and the community we built are excited to have us back too."

What's happening to the old building?

College Bar closed its original location on Dec. 3, after being open for less than two years.

Debbie Williams, a spokesperson for ASU Enterprise Partners, confirmed that Grady Gammage, the building's longtime owner, had part-sold, part-gifted the building to University Realty.

University Realty is a nonprofit entity that uses real estate to support ASU. Williams said ASU is still exploring options for the building's use.

Meanwhile, Nicholas said it was both an excitement and a relief for College Bar to return.

"Joe and I put a lot of work into what we built on College Avenue," he said. "We're excited to be back with old guys … together with the new guys. We look forward to seeing everybody that made College Bar & Grill what it was."
