Huron Street Pub & Grill on Mackinac Island gets a new look, just in time for winter - mlive.com

MACKINAC ISLAND, MI -- On our weekend trip to Mackinac Island for the annual Christmas Bazaar and Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony -- and a show at Original Murdick’s Fudge -- Amy Sherman and I stumbled upon some major changes at the Huron Street Pub & Grill.

I guess any change is major on Mackinac Island, especially when you consider only about 400 residents live there in the wintertime and not much is open except for a few inns, a couple stores and Doud’s Market.

As for restaurants and bars?

Only the Mustang Lounge, better known as The 'Stang, a popular stop for us on Michigan’s Best (Best Wings, BBQ and Pizza), and the Huron Street Pub on Main Street are open for winter.

Owner Tony Brodeur decided it was time to make some changes at the former Patrick Sinclair’s Irish Pub, which he purchased and renamed Huron Street Pub in 2011. (It was originally Ty’s Restaurant from 1950-2000.)

“It’s great having two places open (on the Island),” said Brodeur, who also manages The Mustang.

“People definitely like options. The difficult part is closing for November, which is too slow to have both places running, and then being ready to re-open for the Christmas bazaar.”

While it was closed in November, Huron Street Pub took on a more rustic look with barn wood, a tandem bike on the wall, new Edison bulbs in new light fixtures and lots of corrugated metal. The decor is more aligned to its sister property, the Rusted Spoke Brewing Co. in Mackinaw City. (The Rusted Spoke was on our search for Michigan’s Best Chili and made the Top 10).

A new name for Huron Street Pub is expected in the spring.

“The whole look and feel is so different, we think it’d be weird if we didn’t come up with a new name,” said Brodeur, who added he is not “100 percent settled” on what he will call it.

Judging by reaction from the locals, the restaurant’s new look and vibe was a big hit. It was packed all weekend long for the bazaar, which concluded on Monday and raised money for the Mackinac Island Medical Center and local churches.

Brodeur said Huron Street Pub will remain open through late March and then close for a weeks for more remodeling, before the grand re-opening -- and new name -- on April 17.

The menu will remain sandwiches, burgers, BBQ, appetizers and entrees for now. “Nothing too crazy in the winter,” Brodeur said. A new menu is planned with the name change.

This is the second full winter the Pub will open for the Winter.

The Mustang Lounge is located at 1485 Astor St, Mackinac Island, MI 49757. It is open seven days a week.
